Several friends in the 1930's Farmer's Wife group
have asked me how I'm putting this together using the
Quilt As You Go method.
First of all, let me say that I did not create this method.
I've read several really awesome tutorials online.
One really good one is HAPPY ZOMBIE.
That being said.....here's how I'm putting my
1930's Farmer's Wife blocks together:
First I've sashed the little blocks together with a white-on-white sashing.
This strip is 1 and 1/8th inch wide, a little longer than the side of the block.
I sashed 9 blocks together to create a 19-20" block.
This is a manageable size to quilt using my home sewing machine.
NOTE: You could quilt all the blocks individually and use this method to put them together. I think this would take longer and I like the 20" or so size block.
Next, layer your block as you would a quilt with the backing and warm & natural.
Quilt as you desire. This is really fun because you can do
something different on each little block.
Once quilted, trim the edges.
Now you need to do another one in order to put two together.
I am going to add the block I just quilted
on to the two blocks I already have together.
You need two more strips of fabric 1 1/8th and 1 3/4 inches wide.
Fold the wider strip in half, wrong sides together, and iron flat.
On one block, layer as shown:
The thin strip on top, right sides together.
The folded strip on the bottom.
All raw edges together.
Sew together using a 1/4 inch seam.
You are sewing through the skinny strip, the quilted block and the folded strip.
Press the skinny strip away from the block.
Do nothing with the folded strip.
Grab your second block to attach.
With right sides together, pin your next block
to the top strip. Sew 1/4" seam.
On the back, iron the folded strip across the sewn seam.
Pin to hold it in place.
I sewed this down by hand, however you could sew it on the machine.
This is the first 27 blocks all together!
Hoping to see some more of these Farmer's Wife quilts done in this fashion.
